Now John August, whose blog I thoroughly love and appreciate (along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0041864\/\">his writing<\/a>) has <a href=\"http:\/\/johnaugust.com\/archives\/2010\/those-who-cant-write-teach-seminars\">weighed in on the idea<\/a>, using <a href=\"http:\/\/artfulwriter.com\/?p=1095\">this guy&#8217;s rant<\/a> as a starting point for a more measured take.\u00a0To be fair, the main target is script <em>consultants<\/em>, but August goes on to paint all &#8220;how-to&#8221; folk (book writers, script consultants, seminar-givers) with a broad brush:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don\u2019t endorse any of them. I haven\u2019t found any I\u2019d recommend to readers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m a little shocked that of all the screenwriting books out there \u2014 and there are plenty \u2014 John is unable to find\u00a0<em>even one<\/em> he can recommend (I have found many to be helpful in simply providing an alternate POV on the work, a useful exercise whether I agree with the author&#8217;s conclusions\/assertions or not). But then August comes right back with his reasonable awesomeness with something I can whole-heartedly agree with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think you can learn from people who have spent a long time analyzing a craft, even if they\u2019re not particularly good at practicing it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/victorbornia.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/salieri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-510\" title=\"salieri\" src=\"https:\/\/victorbornia.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/salieri.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>This is what has always bothered me about &#8220;Those who can&#8217;t do, teach.&#8221; There can be great insight gained from methodical analysis of any technique&#8230; Even writing. But sadly, not everyone who gains insights into how something is done \u00a0is actually cut out to\u00a0<em>do<\/em> the thing themselves! We all know the gap between what we can <em>appreciate<\/em> and what we can <em>pull off;<\/em> that maddening gap that keeps us working and striving so that one day, if we are fortunate, we might create something that closes it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harsh.
